My Hero – Ferrari
Updated: 2012-03-31 14:42:02
They say you should never meet your hero – presumably, to avoid the potential for disappointment. Thanks to the folks at www.experiencemad.co.uk, I will soon have the opportunity to climb aboard and drive a Ferrari – my hero – for the first time. As a child who gazed longingly at a poster of an F40 [...]
Volkswagen is showing a tall wagon concept called the Alltrack at the 2012 New York auto show. The concept might look nearly identical to the European Passat Alltrack—and as far as we can tell, it is basically the same—but it doesn’t wear the Passat name and it isn’t going to be sold here. You see, [...]
In recent years, we’ve learned that playing April Fools’ Day pranks on car companies, NASCAR, and the White House can result in some pretty intimidating legal threats. So this year, we’re targeting marks with lighter representation: our friends. Below are five quick and easy ways to get your buddies on April first. Keep Reading: How [...]
Since the current Sierra and Yukon are on their way out—we expect an all-new Sierra pickup to be announced soon—GMC decided to give them one last flash of the spotlight. Heritage editions of both will take a bow at the New York auto show and are supposed to celebrate 100 years of the GMC brand. [...]
For anyone who lived through and reveled in the muscle-car era, the present provokes some serious reflection. Like, what the hell was that all about? Keep Reading: 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 Super Bee – Instrumented Test
What It Is: Fisker’s next extended-range electric sedan, codenamed “Project Nina,” only partially covered by a sheet. The Nina will be smaller—roughly mid-size, dimensionally—and presumably less expensive than Fisker’s Karma. Keep Reading: 2014 Fisker Nina Spy Photos – Future Cars
Dropping a Chrysler slant-six engine into an E30 BMW 3-series is a very bad idea, and yet perfect for the 24 Hours of LeMons. We thought it would be hard to top that ill-advised engine swap, but a gang of wild-eyed California fabricators cooked up something even better (that is, even worse) for last weekend’s [...]
SRT has released a single image of the 2013 Viper’s interior on its Facebook page ahead of the car’s debut at the New York auto show next week. This is the third official sneak peek at the new Viper that SRT has given us, following a glimpse of a carbon-fiber intake and a line drawing [...]
Mini is bringing three new special-edition cars to the New York auto show: the Mini Baker Street and Bayswater hardtops, and the Highgate convertible. The English brand says the cars are supposed to spread London style across the world in advance of that city hosting the 2012 Summer Olympics. Mini Cooper Baker Street The Baker [...]
In designing the latest Jetta and the U.S.-market Passat, Volkswagen didn’t take many aesthetic risks. Their innocuous, slab-sided shapes reflect modern, strip-mall Americana as much as they contrast the elegance of the brand’s other U.S.-market sedan, the eminently European CC. Keep Reading: 2013 Volkswagen CC – First Drive Review
Everything in Michigan slows down between November and April: our metabolism, our fellow drivers, and our mileage accumulation on long-term cars. Perhaps because this has been a mild winter, though, that last one hasn’t been as much of a problem as usual. Our Mini Countryman, now at 27,454 miles, actually increased its rate of mileage [...]
The official debut of a new Ram truck—probably an updated 2013 Ram 1500, which should adopt the Pentastar V-6 and an eight-speed automatic—has been announced for next week’s New York auto show. To whet appetites, Ram released this image of an extreme close-up of the new truck’s chrome-y countenance. From this photo, it appears that [...]
Update: Lexus has released two new preview images of the 2013 ES350 ahead of the car’s debut at the New York auto show next week. The new photos can be seen below. Lexus has released a preview image of the redesigned ES, confirming that the car will appear at next week’s New York auto show. [...]
Acura’s first RDX launched in 2006, in hot pursuit of some dude named Jason. Who’s Jason? An aggressive, competitive (and fictitious) 30-year-old architect who typified Acura’s notion of an “urban achiever.” By 2010, Acura realized that “Jason” prefers “other types of vehicles” (and possibly “blondes”). Actual RDX buyers are “DINKs” (double income, no kids) and [...]
GM’s full-size crossover quadruplets—the Chevrolet Traverse, the GMC Acadia, the Buick Enclave, and the now-deceased Saturn Outlook—were fairly well received when they were first launched. GM’s three surviving eight-passenger utes are getting much-needed midcycle updates for 2013, and Chevrolet has now released details on its freshened Traverse. Keep Reading: 2013 Chevrolet Traverse – Official Photos [...]
We’ve worked the phones, lit up our e-mail accounts, and tapped our sources to deliver intelligence on the hottest vehicles in the pipeline. They’re all here, including Chevy’s secretive C7 Corvette, the next BMW M3, the ninth-generation Honda Accord, and many, many more. Read on to get the inside scoop on the 25 cars most [...]
Ford and its director of Global Performance Vehicles, Jost Capito, are parting ways, the company confirmed to Car and Driver this afternoon. During an 11-year tenure with Ford, Capito oversaw the development of the SVT Raptor and the upcoming Focus ST and Fiesta ST. Working in Europe from 2001 to 2009, Capito ran Ford’s RS [...]
Ford is adding a new, sportier model to the 2013 Explorer lineup called, appropriately, the Sport. (Blue Oval utility freaks should note that this is still based on the regular four-door, three-row body style, and isn’t a revival of the old two-door Explorer of the ’90s and 2000s.) After scanning the Sport’s particulars, however, we’re [...]
What It Is: The 2013 replacement for Maserati’s only current sedan, very little of which is actually visible here. Other than the door handles, windshield, and side windows, there is nothing we can confidently say is a production part of the next-gen Quattroporte. The true surfaces of every frumpy, matte-finished panel, including the hunchback rear [...]
If you had asked us yesterday which New York auto show debut would be the wildest, we’d have probably said the 2013 SRT Viper. We may have to amend that prediction, because Shelby American is bringing a new Ford Mustang Shelby GT500–based model to New York called the Shelby 1000, and it will pack between [...]
Gentlemen, (wait for your glow plugs/grid heaters to warm things up and then) start your engines! Ford said today that it will offer a diesel powerplant as an option in its upcoming Transit van. This engine joins Ford’s twin-turbo EcoBoost V-6 in the Transit‘s known engine portfolio. Ford hasn’t yet given any specifics about the [...]
Toyota and BMW today announced that they have begun developing next-generation lithium-ion batteries for use in hybrid-electric and full-electric vehicles. The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding back in December—essentially an agreement that they’d work on a formal contract—and now have entered into that formal agreement. In addition to working together on battery development, BMW [...]
Just in time for dinner in Boca Raton, Toyota has released a sketch of the next-gen Avalon. The cushy sedan will debut next week at the New York auto show. Just as we saw in recent photos of a prototype 2013 Avalon undergoing testing, the Avalon in the sketch has a generously sloped rear roofline and [...]
Dodge revealed the new Challenger Rallye Redline last week at the Spring Festival of LXs, a car show dedicated to late-model Mopar metal, in Irvine, California. Rallye was previously an optional equipment and aesthetics package available on V-6 Challengers; this announcement essentially promotes the designation to trim level. It’s still available only with a V-6. [...]
GM has taken a step to battle Ford's much-loved Boss 302 Mustang with the new 2013 Camaro 1LE. Slotted below the ZL1, but above the standard SS, the 1LE includes an upgraded suspension with new dampers, sway bars, a tower brace, and a wheel and tire setup based on the ZL1. Other changes include a new close ratio six-speed Tremec transmission, as well as unique interior and exterior treatments.
Pricing will come in below $40,000, and Chevy is looking to have the 1LE approved for competition in SCCA's touring class.

Acura’s next flagship sedan will likely be called RLX, and is expected to debut next month at the New York auto show. The company hasn’t made an official announcement yet, but two signs point to RLX as the replacement badge for RL. First, Acura VP Jeff Conrad may have told Wards that RLX is the [...]
If you’re considering the purchase of a 2013 Camaro SS coupe with a manual, you’re going to want to look at the 1LE package. And if you weren’t considering a new Camaro, you might be now. The option group is intended to transform The General’s affordable V-8 coupe into an affordable V-8 coupe that can [...]
What It Is: A thinly camouflaged example of the next-generation Aston Martin DB9. (Our most recent spy shots of the next DB9 were of a more heavily covered car.) The DB9 is Aston’s two-door middle child, slotting between the “entry level” Vantage and the more-powerful DB9-based DBS. This family tree recently grew with the addition [...]
On Monday we presented this week’s shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle from whence it came. This week’s contest proved none too difficult for most folks. The first commenter to correctly identify it as a 1993 McLaren F1 was Mitchell Kolesnikoff, who will receive a Save the Manuals [...]
The votes are in: Altitude is the winning name for Jeep’s none-more-black Grand Cherokee concept, which was introduced at the Houston auto show in January. Jeep says there’s been so much positive feedback for the original blacked-out Grand Cherokee concept that it has decided to extend the Altitude treatment to the Patriot and Compass as [...]
A photo of the latest upgrade to the 33-year-old Mercedes-Benz G-class was leaked in official photos released by the company. The revised G can be seen lurking in the background of a shot of the 2013 GLK. As shown here, the 2013 G will add a bar of LED running lights—they’re now required equipment on modern [...]
Some LeMons races have a team that grabs a big lead early and never relinquishes it, while other times it’s a hard-fought battle from start to finish. The third annual Sears Pointless 24 Hours of LeMons was the latter, with the first- and second-place cars separated by just a few seconds after a full weekend [...]
Dodge has revealed the first image and a few details regarding its latest motorsports entry, the 2013 Dart RallyCross car. Powered by a turbocharged 16-valve 2.0-liter four-cylinder producing 600 hp and 550 lb-ft of torque, Dodge is claiming 0-to-60 times as low as 1.9 seconds. (The regular Dart’s max output of 184 hp will produce [...]
We’re getting some delayed winter rains here at Infineon Raceway in not-so-sunny Northern California, which means that the track—which is tricky even under ideal weather conditions—was a treacherous, spinout-o-rama all day long. You’d think that the handful of Audi Quattros, which have been waiting for this day for their entire LeMons careers, would rise up [...]
We inspected about 170 race cars at Infineon Raceway yesterday, but the line of beaters, hoopties, and heaps (plus a few fairly well-set-up race cars) awaiting the judgment of the LeMons Supreme Court felt like thousands. After a while, you start to hallucinate faces on the cars. This can’t be real, right? What really stood [...]
What It Is: A mule for Infiniti’s upcoming all-electric sedan. Until now, we had seen only sketches of Infiniti’s EV. Sitting closer to the bottom of Infiniti’s lineup, the EV will aim to please eco-chic shoppers who like the idea of an electric car to drive locally—as well as a premium badge. Keep Reading: 2014 [...]
BMW has announced it will debut the 2012 M6 convertible and updated 2013 X1 crossover for the first time at the 2012 New York auto show. The company already released M6 convertible information and photos ahead of this year’s Geneva auto show (our story on the car is here), but it will make its first [...]
